Ramadhan Bazaar 2008
Sep 23rd, 2008 by Alvin Chong
It has been 19 days into the holy month of Ramadhan before I actually set foot on the Ramadhan Bazaar near my work place. The bazaar has always exude this wonderful food smell that if you were working there, you’d be so tempted to eat almost every hour or so.

Now, that is only the entrance. The whole back and the other corner are full of stalls as well. I have always have this thing for Malay delicacies. No doubt the food tends to be on the more spicy side but it always smells so delicious and the sight of it is just tempting.

One thing that my colleague and I often do is go down to this stall right in front of the bazaar entrance to buy a cup for RM 1. A very expensive cup I must say. OK, I know, lame! I meant a cup of drink. More often than not, we opt for the refreshing sugar cane juice. Notice the pink, yellow and purple coloured drinks? They are kinda scary but at the same time interest me enough to have a taste. Hmmm… Should I?

Walk slightly deeper in and you will find some panggang seafood. I don’t know what’s with the banana leaves but if I were to guess, I’d say they are there to enhance the taste of the food? At this point I was very tempted to grab some, but resisted finally because I’ll end up being the only one to finish it.

Of course, you also get this normal fried noodle dish anywhere but with the hot steam coming from it, it kinda look very delicious.

Oh, and we also have Nasi Kerabu on sale. This came all the way from Kelantan! I seriously don’t know what is with all these perculiar colours but they definitely tempt my senses.

The good thing about these bazaars is that you can literally get anything. I mean, you even get Tapai that is ditanggung halal manis at 25 cents each! In case anyone doesn’t know what Tapai is, it’s actually glutinous rice with sweet tuak (rice wine). Anyone, if I am wrong here, please correct me.

Walk around more and you will see more drink stalls. I tell you, these drinks and their colours never cease to amaze me. I mean seriously, look at the colours on display. Even if they look weird, you’re still very tempted to try them.

Of course, not to also forget the legendary Power Soup. There is even another variation of this with original tendon. Original tendon? Huh? So, there are actually fake tendons now? Hmmm… Anyway, this Power Soup we are talking about here is actually cow’s shaft soup, if you get what I mean. Go ahead, give the cow some heads.

Finally, you can never get this elsewhere. You get nasi lemak everywhere, but you can never get Nasi Lemak ‘Ori’TM anywhere else. This is probably the most special dish you can get at the bazaar. You other nasi lemak sellers out there who sell Nasi Lemak ‘Fake’TM better stop whatever you are doing before you get sued. OK, that was lame. Bah, whatever!
I’ll probably head down for another session of photography. This time, I’ll probably get more details of the dishes. Anyway, for those who wanna read the Sibu version of the bazaar, feel free to head over to Clare’s article on it. ![]()
