My First Visit to Sibu (Part 1)
Oct 23rd, 2007 by Alvin Chong
It is embarrassing, to say the least, that this is my first time going to Sibu albeit having live in Sarawak for the past 23 years of my life. Anyway, barely 48 hours after touching down in Kuching. I packed up and headed north east for the town of Sibu. By land, it’s approximately 500km away from Kuching. By air, it’s only about 150km. -_-”

It is not your standard 4-5 hours drive over in West Malaysia. This 500km stretch will take you 6-7 hours as our federal highway isn’t as wide and as well maintained. My initial plan was to take my car over just for the sake of experience, but after much, and I mean MUCH, persuasion, I finally opted for air travel. It wasn’t really that bad considering the time and the energy I save.

Malaysian 2266 requesting for IFR clearance to Sibu from Kuching as filed…
My flight was at 10.20a.m. and it took me 40 minutes to reach Sibu. 40 minutes compared to 6 hours. -_-” So I landed in Sibu and Ms. Clare was already there to pick me up. Thank god she was on time and not still in bed. 20 minutes later, I reached her home and I was welcomed with a typical Sibu Foochow lunch.

Home made Foochow Mee Suah. Who could resist it?

Then, a large plate of mixed vegetable. Being home cooked, it’s healthy and it’s nice. You can hardly find healthy food when you eat out nowadays.
After a delicious and fulfilling lunch, Clare and I went for some photography session.

Oh by the way, Clare took these pictures, so pardon the quality!
Ooopppz, I was just kidding… Sorry Clare…

That picture on top is what the Sibu people call, Wisma Sanyan and it is supposedly the tallest building in Sarawak standing at 27 storeys high. Then we went for a drink at this Bak Kut Teh shop which didn’t allow photography so, too bad.

We then met up with my long time Australian mate, Steven. Well, it was all about catching up with friends over a cup of tea. In terms of shopping, Sibu, like Kuching, has not many places to shop in. Then, that night, I had the honour of attending the first ever Sibu blogger meet with Beng Beng and son, MonkeyWong and Jam. Of course, not to forget our own Ms Clare.

First, we had what the chinese calls the Ang Sio Tauhu. It’s beancurd covered with sauce, sprinkled with some minced meat. Tastes good, so I’ll let you savour the photo.

Next, came the Philippine Roasted Pork Leg. Yes, the skin is crispy but for some reason, the pork leg isn’t as crispy as it normally is, further confirmed by Clare. I am sure it would have tasted so much better, had it been roasted longer.

No rice for that night, but instead, we had Fried mee, native style. It tastes sweet and spicy at the same time. It blends very nicely with the other dishes. Of course, there was Midin and also a soup which I didn’t bother taking, not because I didn’t want to, but because I was too hungry to even think about taking pictures.

We then adjourned to another place called, The Pinnacle. It is a small, cosy restaurant, we picked for yamcha session. There, we had some talks on blogging and got to know each other better.
It was getting late so we left for home after that. It was an enjoyable but tiring day. There will be a part 2 coming up soon as this post is just getting too long to squeeze into one. To be continued…

Hope you enjoy your trip in this humble town that has not much to offer.
I have been to kuching airport last year around this period too.. So fast, already a year.. BUT never been to sibu…
