First Thing To Do In Kuching
Oct 20th, 2007 by Alvin Chong
So what do people normally do when they first touch down in Kuching? The logical thing to do is to indulge in food, be it a fulfilling meal or just a simple Kolo Mee. As for me, I touched down at 8:10pm. By time everything was done, it was already past 8.30pm. My family and I then proceeded to one of this restaurant at BDC, somewhere opposite Wong Shan Wong. It’s your typical family restaurant, albeit a little smaller than the usual.

First came the Buttered Nestum Prawn. I would personally prefer it to just be buttered but this dish itself is not too bad in isolation. In fact it tastes kinda special. It tastes sweet and it has the Nestum aroma on it.

Next came what must be my favourite dish of the night. It tastes better than it looks. If you are thinking this is your ordinary pork rib soup, you are so wrong. The soup tastes starchy and superb with the coriander leaves. The pork ribs were tender, adding to the already superb taste. A must try with dark soy sauce with cut chilli.

Then, came the buttered squid. It looked delicious but because I wasn’t exactly up for any dishes with squid, I didn’t bother tasting it. So, you’ll have to judge for yourself from the picture above.

The curry fish then came. I am not exactly a big fan of curry but what the heck, it has been ages since I tasted proper curry fish. Many times in KL, I order curry fish and I end up having sweet curry fish, and I have no idea why the curry is sweet! Anyway, back home, the curry tastes like CURRY. Fish, with beancurd sticks, brinjal and long beans. Nice is all I can say.

Last but not least, who could forget the ever so delicious cangkuk manis? Yes, simple but delicious. Stir fry it with fried egg and you are good to go. Yes, I know, you can find this in KL but for some reasons unknown to me, I never seem to be able to find a stall selling this dish. Strange. Anyone care to tell me where I can find cangkuk manis in KL?
After a good, simple family meal, the night in Kuching was ready to start. Of course by that, I mean having a bowl of Kolo Mee for supper after that. MUAHAHAHAHA…
