World Cup, Anyone?
Jun 28th, 2006 by Alvin Chong
I was never really a fan of football. I mean, during normal times, I wouldn’t even bother watching a football match. Nonetheless, when it comes to the World Cup, I just seem to flow with the craze of football. It’s probably due to the fact that the World Cup is only held once in every four years.
See, I am so into the World Cup that even as I am now in KL for a business trip, I would frequent the local mamak stall, right opposite the condominium I am staying, to catch the matches over a cup of tea, so much so that I couldn’t be bothered with updating my blog. Well, it’s actually just part of the reason. The main reason I haven’t been updating for quite sometime is due to the substantial amount of work to be done.
Now, speaking of the World Cup, I just caught up with the Brazil vs. Ghana match last night. I wouldn’t say Brazil was playing at their max, but it was a heart stopping match nonetheless. I anticipate Brazil advancing to the finals. Ghana, despite losing, was pretty impressive last night and I was pretty confident they would have advanced to the quarter finals had they not go against Brazil.
Ronaldo of Brazil, despite being sluggish in this year’s World Cup, scored the first goal at the fifth minute of the first half, giving the Brazilians the advantage. The Brazilians weren’t really aggressive. Throughout the first half, Ghana attempted quite a number of near goal shots which rattled the defense of the Brazilians somewhat. They managed to penetrate the Brazilian defense quite a number of times, but it was good goal keeping that kept the ball from making its way into the Brazilian goal. Despite several aggressive and good attempts, they failed to score their first, only to lead Brazil to their second goal at the forty sixth minute.
The second half of the match was a heart thumping one as well. The Brazilians scored their third goal towards the end of the match. With some divine intervention, the Brazilians managed to penetrate the defenses of Ghana and slow motioned their way to the vulnerable goal post of Ghana. Well, despite losing the match, Ghana has made the Africans proud by making it to the second round of the World Cup.
Not all are good when it comes to the World Cup. One of the worst teams I have encountered in this year’s World Cup has got to be Saudi Arabia. They didn’t seem up to standard but they put up a pretty good fight during their last match against Spain before they retired from the World Cup.
The World Cup is still ongoing and is only going to end on the 9 July 2006. I say enjoy it since it’s only held once in every four years. I might not be an avid fan of football but the World Cup has really got me going and made me understand the game of football more. So, readers, enjoy the World Cup while you still can and I’ll be updating as soon as I can. Signing off and cheers!
