The Election 2006
May 20th, 2006 by Alvin Chong
It’s election day today. Just out of curiousity, I went for a ceramah last night, or rather, earlier tonight. Seriously, it’s either me or the population of Kuching, but it seemed as though the population of the people had increased somewhat. It sometimes makes me wonder, where the hell these people are during ordinary time.
The whole place was so jam packed that an ordinarily peaceful area buzzed to live earlier tonight. So, there I was approaching the stage area after looking for a god damn car park some distance away. I was eager to actually know what they were talking about because I haven’t been to such a talk for ages.
When I got there, one of them were already talking. Come to think of it, some of the things they said did actually make sense. Other than that, it’s all about putting down the opposition. Don’t get me wrong, I am not saying they shouldn’t. I mean, after all, it’s the election and to convince and gain the trust of the people, sometimes they just have to do that to make a comparison.
In fact, some statements made were pretty hilarious as well. Not to forget, I stood there for at least two freaking hours just to hear what they have to say. My legs were pretty sore from having to stand at the same location without moving for the past two hours. I have to say though that we pretty much need to have our own stand and point of view, otherwise, this would be a talk which would pretty much confuse you that somehow, it gets you thinking about who to actually support. Yes, this is how powerful talks are in provoking and instilling different thoughts into the human minds.
To the state leaders, today is like what an exam is to a student. It’s like a day’s war where you either win or lose. The only difference is that, students get to sit for the exam more frequent that country leaders do. To some, they might be having sleepless nights for the next few nights to come.
Last night was also a perfect example for the famous saying that goes something like “You roar when you enter the lion’s dent, you snort when you enter a pig sty”. Albeit the difference in animal names, had I snort when I entered the lion’s dent last night, I don’t think I could have come out alive to see the sun rise today. Yes, there were that many people last night, attending the ceramah. Can you even imagine?
All that being said, I wouldn’t want to elaborate any further. I just want to say, we choose whom we want to lead us and we should make this decision wisely as it will affect how the state is run and developed for the next five years to come. So, happy voting people, and damn, it’s a working day for me tomorrow. How interesting. =)
